Buddenbrooks

Thomas Mann · 1901

Written when Mann was 25. A four-generation saga of a merchant family's decline in Lubeck, published in 1901. The novel proved German fiction could do what 19th-century English and Russian fiction had done: build a whole world and watch it crumble. The Nobel committee cited it specifically when they awarded Mann the prize in 1929.
