Claire-Louise Bennett · 2021

A woman's reading life becomes a novel. Bennett's fragmentary, funny, strange meditation on books, identity, and the way fiction makes us what we are is a strikingly original literary object. A cult classic in the making.

The case against

One chapter runs close to a hundred pages: an invented character combing a library of blank books for one perfect sentence, and it is the single stretch named again and again as where patience ran out. One reader zeroes in on a specific paragraph: “There was one paragraph she wrote about having your period,” saying she could have done without it. Another calls the blank pages themselves a gimmick, citing “the wastefulness of adding blank pages” as a choice that never earns its cost. A third admits chasing the hype and losing: “again, I fell for the media hype,” disappointed that a plotless, digressive novel sat behind the acclaim. Even a sympathetic reviewer concedes the book sometimes “collapses under the weight of Bennett’s ambitions.”
