Zapata's prose draws real complaints: “pages and pages of internal monologue, vague descriptions, repetitive phrases,” with Kulti's eyes and looks re-described nearly every time he's on the page. A critic notes “the movement of the story is incredibly slow” through the book's front half, and even fans who love the slow burn admit the actual romance compresses into the final chapters relative to the book's length. Sal's fangirl mindset toward her childhood idol never fully falls away, captured by her own disbelief that “omg, the great Reiner Kulti is mowing my dad's lawn,” and one reader flatly states “I never felt like their relationship actually developed.” Persistent slut-shaming language toward women interested in Kulti bothers a number of reviewers too.
