The Duchess War

Courtney Milan · 2012

A wallflower with dangerous secrets meets a duke who publishes radical pamphlets. Smart, feminist historical romance that respects its readers.

The case against

Multiple readers stall around the quarter mark, saying nothing happens early, and the heavy factory-town, union-pamphlet plot strikes some as closer to historical fiction than romance, crowding out the courtship. One reviewer flatly states “The main couple have no chemistry together,” and another calls the read “was not a joy, it was a task.” Both leads being virgins reads as implausible for a wealthy, attractive duke to some, and one reader dismisses Robert himself as “too bland and insecure to charm his way into my heart.” Minnie's early willingness to let herself effectively be bought into the courtship arrangement undercuts the backbone her setup promised, and a critic notes “the pacing felt truly off” as the back third stacks one manufactured conflict on another instead of resolving.
