The 1960s humour has aged into whimsy rather than comedy for some readers, “too childish / silly” even to one otherwise-admiring fan. The prose gets called an “indulgent and long-winded writing style” through the middle stretch. The build-a-machine structure repeats often enough that the later stories read as formulaic, “fluff rather than substance,” once the novelty goes. “These stories feel inconsequential,” one disappointed reader sums up, the constructors facing no real stakes or lasting cost when their inventions misfire. And the density of puns and invented terminology exhausts rather than delights when read straight through instead of one story at a time.
