Before it was LotR's prelude, it was the template for the quest narrative, the dragon's hoard, the reluctant hero. The most widely read fantasy novel in history and the entry point for generations into the genre.
The narrator stepping in to address the reader, charming to some, strikes others as twee and immersion-breaking, wanting him to “just get back to the story.” The thirteen dwarves are functionally interchangeable, one reader flagging “too many confusing dwarf names” to tell more than two or three apart. The songs get skipped after the first one or two, and the middle is a repeating cycle of capture, escape, capture again that reads as padding, enough that “366 pages feel like 800.” There are almost no women. And adults coming to it fresh report a hard time getting past the first fifty pages, some deciding it is “better experienced through the films than the text.”
