Written before *Brave New World*, before *1984*, in Soviet Russia. Orwell read it. Huxley read it. Every totalitarian-surveillance novel since owes Zamyatin's 1924 dystopia a debt. D-503's gradual awakening is still the template.
The prose is cryptic to the point of requiring an overdose of attention, and readers consistently find it harder going than 1984. Once the romance takes hold the middle sags. The mathematics and symbol system get in the way as often as they serve, and one reader notes the “dialog seemed herky-jerky to me at times” alongside an “off-putting sense of self-importance.” It lives permanently in Orwell’s shadow, with readers crediting the originality while saying his execution is more satisfying to actually read. Translation choice changes the book substantially. And some land on “an interesting historical curiosity, but not much more than that” as the final verdict.
