Two of the most-liked Arabic-language Goodreads reviews call it flatly monotonous, insisting nothing of consequence happens beyond everyone eventually leaving while the sisters stay put. Translation is a real hazard: one reader faults the Stark Young version as “too stagy, too wordy,” leaving characters “dead before they take the stage,” while another says the Moura Budberg text Olivier filmed turns hot-blooded people “very stoic and oh so British.” A Time Out review of a 2019 touring production notes the pacing moves so briskly that the fire sweeping through town in Act 3 barely registers if a viewer doesn't already know the play, and a second reader admits the script alone feels static, better watched than read.
