A harsher critic reads the narrator herself as condescending, accusing Nelson of watching from an “esoteric high horse,” and another calls the whole project a “long list of resentments,” “devoid of love and compassion.” The opening pages start with an explicit sex scene that reads as a dare before the book even gets to pregnancy or grief.
