A Little Life

Hanya Yanagihara · 2015

Four college friends in New York. One carries a secret that destroys him. The most devastating novel of the decade.

The case against

The pattern of harm loaded onto Jude reads to many reviewers as engineered rather than earned, especially since doctors, police, and social workers stay implausibly absent throughout, a structural convenience critics say manufactures suffering rather than letting it arise from a believable world. Readers reach for blunt language for it, calling it “misery porn, on purpose” and worse. Some readers who are disabled themselves go further, describing the treatment of Jude's disability as “torture porn at the disabled character's expense.” A critic summed up the pattern as a “monotonous series of assaults,” and plenty of fans agree the seven-hundred-plus pages “could have lost 250 pages easily,” pointing to JB's repeated art descriptions as the passages that drag rather than build.
