Some readers who are disabled themselves go further, describing the treatment of Jude's disability as “torture porn at the disabled character's expense.” A critic summed up the pattern as a “monotonous series of assaults,” and plenty of fans agree the seven-hundred-plus pages “could have lost 250 pages easily,” pointing to JB's repeated art descriptions as the passages that drag rather than build.
