The book leans on a dense parade of French brand names, politicians, and songs, and readers without that specific cultural memory report long stretches feeling like a summary of history they'd need to already know. One reviewer says the collective we and impersonal she “left me completely cold”, and another writes it “played out like an old black and white documentary”. A third jokes it comes “Highly recommended to all feminists and French lovers of Trivial Pursuit”, and calls the result “a soulless and joyless march through a life”. More than one reader admits it was hard to feel anything for this novel despite recognizing its ambition, and a sour early joke on the first pages alone soured at least one reader before the collective voice earned any trust.
