Vinge divides the galaxy into "zones" of intelligence: the Slow Zone (Earth), the Beyond, the Transcend. A released data archive may be a weapon. The 1992 novel combines the decade's largest cosmological SF concept with a story set among a pack-minded alien species that thinks collectively.
The opening is rough going, three simultaneous plotlines and a big cast and invented vocabulary dropped with little hand-holding, and even admirers concede it is “longer than the books I usually read.” The human children stranded among the Tines read thinner than the aliens, and those chapters are the ones readers skim. The Net chapters divide hardest, clever satire to some and a momentum-killing slog to others, and they are the section most likely to read as dated now. The prose is functional and expository rather than elegant. And the back half feels rushed against the patience the setup demanded.
