The Warrior's Apprentice

Lois McMaster Bujold · 1986

Miles Vorkosigan, seventeen and brittle-boned, breaks both legs on the entrance test for Barrayar's military academy. Sent to visit his grandmother on Beta Colony, he buys a condemned freighter to keep its pilot flying and takes a cargo job into a blockaded war zone.
