A Tamil girl comes of age during the Sri Lankan civil war. Ganeshananthan wrote a vital novel about a conflict largely unknown to Western readers, insisting on full human complexity from its characters rather than reducing them to victims or combatants.
Sashi carries the whole war on her own testimony, and several readers say she is underwritten for it, one review stating plainly that “her characterisation was extremely weak.” The same flat, reportage-toned narration that other readers praise as restraint reads to detractors as distance: one calls it “more like dry and impersonal war reporting” and another admits “I just could not embrace that style.” Ganeshananthan's habit of turning to address an implied 'you' who doesn't already know this history splits opinion further, read by some as a device that keeps interrupting the story to explain itself.
