Convenience Store Woman
A 36-year-old woman who finds perfect meaning in the rituals of a convenience store refuses to conform to social pressure. Murata's slim, dry, funny novel is a devastating critique of capitalist conformity, written with zero self-pity and total formal control.
Shiraha, the coworker who enters partway through, draws the sharpest complaints of anyone in the book. Multiple readers call him “the incel ruined the book completely”, and another writes bluntly, “Shiraha is a roach and i hate him”. Detailed critical reviews go further, arguing that coding Keiko as neurodivergent lets the story explain her away rather than indict the society around her, one summing it up as “something that explains everything effectively ends up explaining nothing” and leaving the protagonist as a kind of prop for the theme.
