At 650-plus pages split across four extended sections, length draws the widest complaint, repeated across star levels; one reader sums up the middle stretch as “this absolute brick of a book just went on and on”. A vocal group calls the prose itself weak in long stretches, arguing the celebrated formal tricks, missing punctuation and the late person-shift, read as gimmicks rather than earned choices. Cass and Imelda draw the sharpest specific criticism among the four narrators, one reviewer dismissing Imelda outright: “Imelda is one of those stock female characters”, less convincing than the book’s male narrators. The ending is the most argued-over element in the whole reception, and one disappointed reader says it “felt like a complete cop out, not fair to readers” after such a long investment.
