Trust

Hernan Diaz · 2022

Four nested narratives about wealth, narrative authority, and who gets to tell the story of American capitalism. Diaz constructed a puzzle box that rewards every layer of attention and asks genuinely hard questions about whose version of history we inherit. Technically dazzling and morally serious at once.

The case against

The first two sections have almost no dialogue or interiority and read as dry distancing exposition, with more than one reviewer calling the pastiche a feeble imitation of Wharton and admitting “the good stuff is front-loaded.” The third draws the opposite complaint, some calling it outright “the longest and worst section of the book,” dragging hardest under material about the narrator’s anarchist father. The structural reveals are heavily telegraphed, so piecing it together loses its pleasure. Readers report finishing and within days being unable to recall much or explain their own rating. And the final section lands smaller than four hundred pages of setup promised, landing for some as “a very underwhelming payoff.”
