⚖The case for it

Old Major’s speech in the barn at night sets everything after it in motion, and the first season of the animals running the place themselves is the rush readers remember. Squealer explaining, re-explaining and quietly amending the rules is the sharpest satire in the book, and readers apply him to their own politics without being prompted. The animals have temperaments rather than assignments, which keeps the fable from going slack. The prose is “lucid, sparse, stripped of any sentimentality.” It “packs more punch in 100 pages than most books manage in 500,” and readers “read Animal Farm over and over again and still be delighted.”

The mapping is one to one, so reading becomes running a decoder against Soviet history until “the allegory turned out to be a creaking machine.” The harder charge comes from the left: the ordinary animals are “depicted as dumb and docile from beginning to end,” which critics read as “aristocratic contempt towards the people, the working class” rather than a strike at the leadership alone. Without the history the satire misfires, and “if you don’t know a thing about russian revolution” the book gets handed to students bare. Its own fame spoils its turn. Some find it mild against what Stalinism actually did.
