The lack of resolution is the most common complaint, “no explanations, unreliable facts and an abrupt ending,” which reads as evasive rather than atmospheric. Emotional flatness recurs: “I found myself completely uninvolved and not at all scared or disturbed,” readers blaming the detached narrator and anonymised cast. Strip the mood and comparatively little happens. One reader uses atmospheric as a direct synonym for boring. And a portion rank it the weakest of the trilogy, recommending the later volumes as the fair test.
