The central mechanism draws the sharpest complaint: readers who note that literacy and universities coexist with advanced tech find the premise, a society banning books, illogical. The prose is called “too damn flowery to be understandable,” whole paragraphs of metaphor needing a reread to extract one plot beat, and the characters land “flat, somewhat numb.” The women are thin or absent as agents, and no woman author appears among the preserved books. The middle drags with digressive asides, the ending feels rushed after the slow build. And some call the anti-media stance dated and preachy, Bradbury as “an old man who shakes his cane angrily at ‘dat there television’.”
