The old Wendayne Ackerman translation went through a German intermediary rather than the Russian, and readers call it “pretty much unreadable,” which makes edition choice decisive here; readers find stretches “uselessly wordy and extremely abstract.” The outsider posture reads to modern reviewers as a patronising civilised-man-among-savages stance. The women are flattened into a narrow split and the age gap in the central relationship is uncomfortable now. Some find it a sequence of philosophical set pieces rather than a driven plot. And the protagonist’s persistent passivity frustrates readers who want him to act.
