What readers complain about first is Lauren reading emotionally flat in her own diary, ironic given hyperempathy should make her feel everything acutely. A cluster call her sanctimonious, “Lauren’s supposed wisdom was bullshit” at the blunt end, the Earthseed verses dismissed as “fortune cookie sentiments” readers skip: “I had to skip rather large paragraphs.” Kirkus flags “a vanishingly thin plot,” a survival journey with a manifesto layered on. Others question the internal logic, functioning big-box stores and property taxes alongside total collapse. And the density of sexual violence numbs rather than illuminates.
