Because Mike can model outcomes with near-perfect confidence, a critic says the book “elides it by having Mike solve every problem,” draining its own suspense well before the later chapters. The treatment of women reads as regressive dressed as progressive: value tied to scarcity rather than agency, one reader’s whole verdict being “So. Much. Mansplaining.” Large stretches are pure political exposition, extended debate rather than incident, where readers name the point they nearly quit. Even admirers grant “the long libertarian digressions are much harder to tolerate now.” And readers compare it to The Dispossessed, almost always to its disadvantage.
