Orientalism
Said argued that Western knowledge of "the Orient" is not neutral scholarship but a tool of imperial domination; that how the West described Asia and the Middle East was always about power, not truth. It founded postcolonial studies as a discipline and made scholars everywhere examine their own assumptions about knowledge.
The prose is “super dry and hard to get through at times,” and more than one reader admits it took a year to finish. It restates its thesis rather than building on it, stretches that “sound like a broken record.” The specialist pushback, from Bernard Lewis and later Robert Irwin, is that the book carries “many factual, methodological and conceptual errors” and picks weak targets, singling out Said's unfair treatment of the scholar Edward Lane; one critic laments that “the term Orientalist is now polluted beyond salvation.” He narrows the Orient to the Arab Middle East while claiming a far wider East. And a hostile minority dismisses the whole as “Intellectual porn for self-hating westerners.”
