The Structure of Scientific Revolutions

Kuhn coined "paradigm shift" and, more importantly, showed that science does not progress smoothly but through revolutionary ruptures, when anomalies accumulate until the old framework collapses. The most cited academic book of the 20th century, across every discipline.

The case against

The most common complaint, in near-identical words across reviews: a short essay stretched by repetition to book length, a “ponderous execution” that “confuses bad table manners with succinct scholarship.” The thesis strikes many as obvious once stated, “who could really argue otherwise?” Kuhn leans on the same five physics examples but “it doesn't explain any of the examples,” so a reader who does not already know the history guesses at the content. Incommensurability draws the hardest pushback, since fields do compare old and new frameworks in practice; one exasperated reader answers the whole book with “it's because there's an objective reality, Tom.” The 1969 postscript is Kuhn correcting himself after readers found twenty different senses of “paradigm.”
