Sections often open on an unnamed 'she,' forcing readers to guess whose viewpoint they're in until context resolves it, and one reader says the decade-jumping pace turns the whole thing into “a story told at the speed of light.” Five points of view get spread across too little space to develop any of them; readers complain the “characters were uni-dimensional, I felt them as strangers until the end,” never given room to become more than sketches. Reese's storyline, meant to run the trans man's passing alongside the twins' racial passing, draws a harder complaint from some readers who call him “a ticked box for LGBTQ+ diversity” rather than a person in his own right.
