The Book of Disquiet
Not a conventional novel. A fragment-diary of a fictional heteronym (Bernardo Soares), assembled from thousands of scraps found in a trunk after Pessoa's death in 1935. Published in 1982. A meditation on consciousness, anonymity, and the beauty of things never done. There is nothing else like it in world literature.
Nothing accumulates. "The first vignette and the 300th are largely replaceable," one reader observes, and readers who try to go straight through report quitting around the two-thirds mark with no way to tell how much remains. What repeats is the mood, futility and isolation and longing, filed by one reader as "philosophical emo journal entries" and by another, less kindly, as "a Portuguese man bellyaches about his crummy life." The gloom is uniform enough that one reader "paired it with The Magic Mountain for light relief." And the object itself is contested, since Pessoa left undated fragments in a trunk and editors assembled the book he never finished.
