Zami: A Biomythography / Sister Outsider

Zami’s back half slides into what several readers call mush, long stretches of sensory prose once the girl-bar scenes give way to memory and myth. The adolescent material draws pushback too, readers saying they wanted more of the poetry and libraries and less of the over-shared passages; one admits “felt like there was a hole missing in this story”. The 1950s economic backdrop, affordable Greenwich Village rent, open college access, reads as foreign now, and one reader admits “I’m both the wrong audience and arguably, the wrong generation”. Sister Outsider takes its own hits too: A Trip to Russia reads dated next to the rest, and one reader complained the essays “didn’t have a clear purpose and so while I agreed” with Lorde’s points, insight ran thin.
