Salih inverts Heart of Darkness: a Sudanese man educated in Britain returns home, carrying the violence of colonialism inside him. "The story revolves around one axis only: sex," one reader objects, and the seductions that admirers read as weaponized colonial inversion read to others as pornography with a thesis attached. The women exist as instruments for two men's arcs, "pawns in his sick game." Mustafa himself is "selfish and cold" rather than compellingly enigmatic. The narration jumps between voices without signposting, leaving readers "flipping back to confirm who was speaking." Secondary characters arrive and vanish. And the book leans on its own apparatus, since readers resent needing the translator's introduction to unlock it, filing the result as "obtuse and fascinated with itself."
