Hard SF space opera without faster-than-light travel. Reynolds, a working astrophysicist, builds his 2000 debut on vast distances and deep time, and his prose has a cold lyricism that suits the emptiness between stars.
The prose draws the sharpest complaint, “it’s funky, but it’s clunky,” overworked metaphors down to one reader’s nominated “worst paragraph I’ve read all year.” The dialogue exists so characters can explain technology to each other, “20 minute info dumps every 20 minutes.” Three strands, an archaeologist and a ship crew and a hired assassin, take too long to converge, and the first half is heavy exposition with little momentum. The cast are “cardboard cutout characters,” defined entirely by professional obsession. Five hundred and eighty-five pages of it, and even readers who love the wider series often name this entry the weakest.
