Cursed Bunny

Bora Chung · 2022

Short stories in the tradition of the dark fantastic: corporate capitalism, body horror, and patriarchy filtered through fairy tale. Chung's collection represents the best of Korean literary horror and announced Anton Hur as a major translator.

The case against

Cursed Bunny front-loads its best material, and several readers say momentum drops hard once the first two or three stories end, skimming picks up well before the last page. Scars, the longest entry at roughly double the others' length, draws the sharpest pushback, criticized for padding rather than earned scope and for an ending some call unsatisfying after the buildup. A cluster of readers call the prose itself the problem, one flatly writing “the prose is bland, so horribly bland,” and another naming a specific story “one of the worst short stories I've read in a long time.” Characters across the collection read as thin to some, dismissed as “mouthpieces for the weird and wacky ideas” rather than people. One rattled reader closes with a simple question: “is it art?”
