The Communist Manifesto

Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels
1848
The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.

Decide its fate

The case for it
The prophecies collapsed, but Marx and Engels still saw capitalism plainly. They watched it dissolve every settled custom it touched, batter open every border, and pull the world into one market, and that was 1848. Where the pamphlet goes slack is the program: once it stops describing and starts prescribing, the ten demands turn into a committee's shopping list. Yet the passage praising the bourgeoisie's raw energy hits harder than most defenses of capitalism written since. Forty pages you can finish in an evening, and an argument that will keep turning up in front of you for years.

The case against
A third of it is a feud with rival socialist sects nobody has heard of since 1850. The predictions mostly went the wrong way: workers in industrial nations got richer, the middle class swelled instead of vanishing, and revolutions arrived in peasant empires the theory said were not ready. As diagnosis it crackles. As forecast it has the worst track record in print.
